Rain water preserved through a bund-protected pond near Kudumbams Kolunji farm.

The concept of tank ecology is basically every aspect related to water. It is simultaneously focused on the watering of crops and plants. The groundwater is in parts of India not suitable for agricultural purposes and this is a reason why the re-establishing of tank ecology is important. The agricultural field is structured or organized in a way that can then receive water from a tank. The idea of establishing tank ecology is that it’s intended to increase and enhance the soil moisture. Another aspect is to plant mainly fruit trees at the farmers field to control and reduce the flow of water. Water conservation forms a pivotal part of re-establishing tank ecology. Sensitizing the people in the target areas about issues with toxic water from the prolonged use of chemical pesticides is another important part of this activity. The work and promotion of tank ecology is something Kudumbam intends to continue working with in the future. We desire to broaden the reach of this activity in the future by sensitizing farmers, students, schools, other NGOs and researchers from universities simultaneously.
